The ACSM Radio Hour

Curtis W. (Curt) Sumner

Curtis W. (Curt) Sumner is the Executive Director of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM), and its largest Member Organization the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), collectively serving the interests of professional surveyors nationwide, and internationally.

As a long-time member representing of ACSM and NSPS on the ALTA/ACSM Land Title Survey Requirements Committee, he has joined his fellow committee members in the development of upgrades made to these standards, including the 2011 version.

Mr. Sumner is an invited presenter and keynote speaker throughout the U. S., and his articles routinely appear in many national and state publications.

He is a licensed professional surveyor in Virginia and Maryland.

ACSM

The American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) was founded in June 1941 and is incorporated as a non-profit educational organization whose goal is to advance the sciences of surveying and mapping and related fields, in furtherance of the welfare of those who use and make maps. ACSM also encourages the development of educational programs and supports publications that represent the professional and technical interests of surveying and mapping. The society is comprised of four independently incorporated Member Organizations which include more than 5000 surveyors, cartographers, geodesist, and other spatial data information related professionals from private industry, government, and academia throughout the world. Each member Organization serves the specific interests of their respective members, while working collectively to achieve the overall goals of ACSM.

Today, the technology explosion has provided new methods of attaining and using spatial data. Geographic information systems (GIS), Land information systems (LIS), and the Global Positioning System (GPS) have revolutionized the spatial relationships of both actual objects and planned concepts. ACSM continually seeks to respond to the challenges presented by these new technologies.

The non-governing ACSM Congress is comprised of two delegates and one alternate representing each of the Member Organizations. The Congress also includes non-voting delegates representing Associate Organizations. The Congress administers the activities that have been agreed upon by the Member Organizations as joint efforts.

ACSM does continue to have Sustaining Members who provide high-quality products and services to the Geospatial professionals within all four MOs.

ACSM sponsors an Annual Convention each Spring. Typically, the convention is held in partnership with one or more national, regional, of state organization. This important industry event typically attracts up to 2,000 attendees. Continuing education opportunities are available during the annual spring conference.

The ACSM Congress and the Member Organization Boards of Directors hold fall business meetings, and sometimes these meetings are held in conjunction with a conference held by other organizations.
